Summary
A running list of fonts and font foundries I like.
Pangram Pangram
A Montreal-based font foundry with really affordable prices. License all of their fonts for personal use for $29/year. https://pangrampangram.com/products/fsp
Mostly display fonts (i.e. pretty interesting, great to blow up on a poster, but too wonky to write long paragraphs with). There are a few that are suitable for web use:
- Neue Montreal is a great Helvetica alternative.
- I’ve used Fraktion Sans as a primary font in the 2022 iteration of bencuan.me.
- The 2025 version of bencuan.me features Eiko and Pangaia.
- Mori, Rader, and Frama are cool too.
Atipo
Pay-what-you-want foundry and creator of Novela, one of my favorite serif fonts. Currently live on the 2024 iteration of bencuan.me.
Hanoded
Huge collection of affordable handwritten style fonts from a guy named David in the Netherlands.
I currently use The Cat’s Whiskers in the garden banner and seed-stage text (Garden Design) and Crowd Pleaser as my banner for notes.bencuan.me.
NerdFonts
https://www.nerdfonts.com/font-downloads
An aggregator of open source developer fonts with proper ligature support. My favorite monospace fonts include:
- Fira Code (my current choice of editor font)
- Source Code Pro
- Iosevka (featured in elenapan’s dotfiles)
Phosphor Icons
An open-source and lightweight alternative to Font Awesome.
Butterick’s Practical Typography
https://practicaltypography.com/
A textbook about typography. Comes with font recommendations (like Charter).
Google Fonts
Huge collection of open-source fonts. Great default place to start looking!
