Summary
Scattered thoughts and journaling from reading through We Need Your Art by Amie McNee.
overall
- ‘perfect is the enemy of good’ but it is a book now.
- probably could have been a long essay rather than a book; felt like it was stretching itself somewhat thin. While I took things from it, I had to fight it a little bit to extract meaning. Most of the notes below are from random brainwaves that hit (and therefore are only loosely related to the actual contents on the page).
- not bookshelf-worthy for me.
random notes
- pursuit of play and creativity; take things less seriously!
- set up a consistent practice
- imposter syndrome is good; find opportunities to experiment with identity (e.g. on social media)
- when a mental reset is needed: plan to create a limited amount of output consistently (every day), but add constraints to decrease workload and increase flow
- single takes, no research, only draw boxes, compose songs in the key of c major…
- build credibility (w/ self and others by showing up consistently), then foster curiosity
- find your own brand of creative power
- get a typewriter ??
- court rejection, fail repeatedly
- on developing voice: create vulnerable art
- study voice more deliberately
- examples of creative voices I like: jacob geller, jasmine sun…
- study voice more deliberately
- Hank Green’s 80 percent rule (https://nerdfighteria.info/v/1LAhHDEtTD0/)
- Feedback:
- don’t take feedback too early
- don’t take too much of it
- don’t take it too seriously
- Be patent; you can’t choose what becomes successful
